Spouses’ Money

Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) is told by his opponent, Gov. William F. Weld, that it is scandalous, outrageous and unacceptable for Kerry to use any of his wife’s vast fortune to further his political fortunes (Life & Style, April 26).
Meanwhile, on Page A3, same issue, former Superior Court Judge G. Dennis Adams in San Diego, who may prove to be guilty of taking bribes--but also may not be, having only been charged with wrongdoing, not tried--is in a different boat. Federal prosecutors say he by all means ought to use his wife’s money to pay for his defense. Not to do so, but to expect a free public defender, is scandalous, etc., and a big no-no.
An old-time saying: “Ya pays yer money, ya takes yer cherce (choice).” Nowadays ya simply pays yer money; yer not allowed to take (or make) yer cherce. Welcome to Alice’s rabbit hole. Even Candide would shake his head in bewilderment.
