Making Marks: Forget guns and cigarettes; the state Senate is moving forward with a ban on spray paint cans (A3). . . . Many Ventura County retailers already sell the stuff from locked compartments or in adults-only sections. Chuck Martin, manager of the Dunn-Edwards paint shop in Simi Valley, wonders what’s next in the war on graffiti: “Would they do the Marks-a-lot markers?”
Movie Review: A distinctive set of questions will greet the jury pool in the trial of Daniel Tuffree, accused of killing a Simi Valley cop. Prosecutor Peter Kossoris won permission to ask prospective jurors next week if they saw “Dead Man Walking.” . . . The Academy Award-winning film about a death row inmate, Kossoris said, “relates to a lot of what we’re going to do.”
Burritos Grande: Ever since the May issue of Sunset magazine labeled the burritos at Johnny’s among the best in the West, the little restaurant on the Avenue in Ventura has been swamped. . . . “We’ve had people calling for directions from San Luis Obispo, San Diego, Agoura Hills--all over,” fatigued co-owner Tina Kraft says. . . . Jake Stoddard, a Santa Barbara lawyer (above), feels vindicated by the hoopla. “I grew up on Johnny’s burritos.”
For Sale: Great views, built-in pool, perfect for a family with gills. . . . Port Hueneme has put its water tower on the market. Built in 1954, the 131-foot tower is expendable now that the city has a new water system coming on line. . . . Jim Passanisi, water superintendent, is advertising the tower in national trade journals and some newspapers. The price? Basically, he said, if you can haul it away and tidy the site, it’s yours. But that work could cost about $85,000.
