El Toro Basketball Coach Shoemaker Announces Resignation

Dave Shoemaker has resigned as El Toro boys’ basketball coach to take a coaching and teaching position at Tulare Union High in the San Joaquin Valley, El Toro boys’ Athletic Director John Johansen said Wednesday.

In his two years as head coach, Shoemaker had a 24-29 record. The Chargers advanced to the quarterfinals in the Southern Section Division I-A playoffs this year before being eliminated by Riverside Poly.

Johansen said no replacement has been named.

Paul Kirby has been named girls’ basketball coach at Estancia High and Dale Hall has been named girls’ volleyball coach, girls’ Athletic Director Nancy Ferda announced.

Kirby, the junior varsity coach the past two years, replaces Russ Davis, who resigned March 28 to become the women’s coach at Southern California College.

Kirby is a walk-on coach who served as Davis’ assistant the past four seasons.

Hall, who is also the boys’ volleyball coach, played one season on the U.S. national team and spent several seasons playing professionally in Italy and on various beach tours.

The former Dale Keough was a three-time all-CIF performer at Corona del Mar High in the late 1970s.

Chad Boberg of Cypress has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Brigham Young University of Hawaii, said Coach Tom Gorrell. Boberg, a 6-foot-4 forward, was the Empire League’s most valuable player last season. He averaged 22.5 points, third best in the county.

Matt Blasdel, a defender on the Santa Margarita soccer team, will play at Gonzaga next season, Paul Blasdel, his father, said.

Blasdel was a four-year letterman for the Eagles, who won one Southern Section Division III championship and reached the semifinals twice in that time. He also competed for the school’s track and field team and won the 400 meters and 300 hurdles at the Sea View League finals.

Huntington Beach freshman Maryn Ciarelli finished second among age-group weightlifters over the weekend at the United States-Canada National Junior Olympic meet outside Montreal.

Ciarelli competed in the 16-and-under 59-kilos (130 pounds) classification. She finished second to the junior national champion from Canada.

Ciarelli snatched 115 pounds, winning that competition, and lifted 132 in the clean and jerk to finish second. She was beaten by 2 1/2 kilos in the overall competition.

Kefrin Springer of Capistrano Valley signed a letter of intent to play volleyball at Colgate University, according to his mother, Melinda Springer. Springer, a senior setter who graduates as class valedictorian with a 4.1 grade-point average, was also offered scholarships by Cornell and Yale.

Maureen Skehan, who helped the Saddleback College women’s basketball team (32-1) reach the state finals this past season, has signed to attend Northern Arizona in the fall, the school announced Wednesday.

Skehan, who was twice a first-team All-Orange Empire Conference selection, averaged 13 points, four rebounds and five steals this past season. She is Saddleback’s all-time steal leader.

Skehan is a graduate of Villa Park High.

Lance Day, a 6-foot-9 senior center at Servite High, has received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy and intends to play basketball there, Friar Athletic Director Larry Walker said.

Day, who missed the Orange County all-star game because of a sore foot, averaged 14 points and 9.5 rebounds a game.
