Antonovich Asks State to Keep Sex Offender in Custody

Supervisor Mike Antonovich urged state officials Friday to keep a convicted sexual offender from being released into a Pasadena neighborhood.
In letters to Gov. Pete Wilson and state correctional officials, Antonovich said John Shupe has a 30-year history of sexually assaulting girls as young as 3.
Shupe, who is in temporary custody, is under investigation in connection with crimes involving children since his release in March to the Pasadena area, Antonovich said.
“I am requesting that the Board of Prison Terms and the Department of Corrections take whatever steps necessary to keep Shupe in custody and out of that Pasadena neighborhood,” he wrote.
The supervisor further urged that Shupe be held for psychiatric testing.
Correctional officials were not immediately available for comment.
