Woman Held in Attempted Murder

A 19-year-old Van Nuys woman was charged Tuesday with attempted murder for allegedly trying to flush down a toilet the baby she gave birth to during an interview for a baby-sitting job.

Glendale Police Sgt. Fran Judge said Maria Velasquez gave birth to the premature baby Saturday night in the bathroom of an apartment in the 400 block of East Dryden Street, where she was being interviewed for the job. The apartment residents rescued the infant boy and called police, Judge said.

Velasquez was arrested and held in the jail ward at County-USC Medical Center.

The baby’s condition was stable Tuesday at Glendale Adventist Hospital.

The attempted murder and felony child abuse charges against Velasquez carry a possible life sentence, said Sandi Gibbons, spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office.
