Scott Brayton at a Glance

Scott Brayton, 37, of Coldwater, Mich., on Friday was the 66th person and 39th driver killed at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway since the track opened in 1909.

* Indy 500 history: Qualified last Saturday for the pole position for the second consecutive year, only the ninth time that feat had been accomplished. . . . His four-lap average of 233.718 mph in a Lola-Menard was a record, but it later was broken by Arie Luyendyk on the second day of time trials. . . . Finished 16th as a rookie at Indianapolis in 1981. . . . Set a one-lap record in qualifying for the middle of the front row at Indy in 1985. . . . After starting on the pole in 1995, he dropped to fourth on the first lap but never got higher than third after that and finished 17th. . . . Brayton’s best finish in 14 Indy 500s was sixth twice.

* Driving history: Best Indy car finish in 157 starts was third at Milwaukee in 1992. . . . Brayton had not had a full-time ride on the Championship Auto Racing Teams circuit since 1992. . . . Was one of the beneficiaries of the new Indy Racing League, finishing 15th at Orlando and 18th at Phoenix in the first two IRL events this year. . . . Began racing Formula Karts in 1975 and was the series champion in 1979.

* Personal: Son of Lee Brayton, who passed his Indy rookie test in 1972 but never drove at the Speedway. . . . Survived by wife Becky, daughter Carly, 2, and parents Lee and Jean Brayton.
