HITTING THE ROAD: The Art of the American Road Map by Douglas A. Yorke Jr., John Margolies and Eric Baker (Chronicle: $18.95; 132 pp., paperback original). Between 1912 and the late 1970s, oil companies, tire manufacturers, auto makers and auto clubs gave away more than 8 billion maps of the expanding American road system. The work of top commercial artists gave the maps of the ‘30s, ‘40s and early ‘50s a panache that is sadly lacking in the uninspired charts sold in vending machines today. Yorke, Margolies and Baker offer an affectionate salute to a vanished bit of Americana.
