Governor to Urge School Maintenance Budget Increase

SACRAMENTO — Gov. Pete Wilson will recommend a major increase in funding for school maintenance and safety programs when he submits his May budget revisions, an administration official said Sunday.
The revised budget will recommend an additional $51.5 million, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The maintenance funding is “another brick in the foundation of the ‘no excuses’ policy,” the official said. “No more excuses about leaky roofs, broken windows or backed-up plumbing.”
When added to about $50 million proposed previously and about $40 million in ongoing funding, a total of about $140 million in state funding for maintenance will be recommended Tuesday when Wilson releases a revision of his January budget proposals.
