Valley Secession

Your May 16 editorial, “A Definite Maybe on Secession,” ridiculed those who oppose San Fernando Valley secession from Los Angeles, yet support the Boland bill, which would remove the L.A. City Council’s authority to veto a secession attempt. In 1776, when American colonialists voted whether or not to secede from Great Britain, would you have also supported King George’s right to veto the secession attempt?

* Your forthright stand against secession, while admirable for its conviction, fails to inform us if you believe Valley residents should have an opportunity to resolve the issue for themselves at the ballot box.
It seems to me that City Councilwoman Laura Chick, in her vote for the bill, is supporting just such a right. She stands with The Times in opposition to secession but supports Valley residents in their right of self-determination. If that’s waffling, pass the syrup!
