Ward Valley Dump
In response to Alan Pasternak’s May 8 letter: Ward Valley and the chosen operator, US Ecology, have been unable to gain the confidence of political leaders in California and Washington.
Numerous members of the California congressional delegation as well as members of the state Legislature have serious concerns regarding the safety of Ward Valley, the Republicans and Democrats alike.
Those critical of placing a nuclear waste dump next to California’s major source of water (the Colorado River) are falsely accused by Pasternak of “eventually stopping the use of radioactive material in medicine, medical and other scientific research.” Critics of Ward Valley favor using modern methods of handling and storing radioactive material from medicine and science in highly engineered, monitored and retrievable storage facilities. No other advanced nation buries its dangerous nuclear waste in unlined dirt trenches like what is proposed at Ward Valley.
