Renewal of China’s Trade Status

* Re “Most-Favored Status Is Not a Perk,” by Dianne Feinstein, Commentary, May 19:
Most-favored-nation (MFN) status should not be granted to China, whose government consistently abuses the human rights of its own citizens and continues to occupy the nation of Tibet, its peaceful Buddhist neighbor, with brutally repressive force, as it has for the past 46 years.
The United States’ trade deficit with China was $35 billion in 1995. How does this increase U.S. jobs? Sen. Feinstein’s numbers regarding trade with China were misleading, and her own family’s investments in China create a conflict of interest when she votes on issues regarding China in the Senate.
I question the morality of rubber-stamping MFN when it comes to dealing with totalitarian regimes such as China. The United States is a great nation when it stands for truth and freedom around the world. Improving Sino-American relations is a valid and worthy goal. It shouldn’t be achieved at the cost of human rights.
