Shooting Range Expansion Considered
The U.S. Forest Service is soliciting public comment on a proposal to allow gun enthusiasts to expand a shooting range in a remote canyon area in Los Padres National Forest.
Prior to renewing the Ojai Valley Gun Club’s current permit to use a 57-acre range off Rose Valley Road, the Forest Service plans to do an environmental impact report. The club has asked to expand the range by 12 acres and to be allowed to hold an annual meeting of about 300 people there, including shooting events, vendors and camping. The permit would be good for 10 years.
The study will look at the shooting range’s compatibility with existing uses, the visual impact from Rose Valley Road, its availability for public use and future site restoration. Any comments from the public on possible impacts are welcomed, either by calling Marian Kadota at 967-3481, or by writing to Lawrence Mastic, District Ranger, Ojai Ranger District, 1190 E. Ojai Ave., Ojai, CA 93023.
Comments should be received by June 9.
