Mavericks to Hire Cleamons; Kupchak Interviews for GM Job

DALLAS — Chicago Bull assistant Jim Cleamons will be hired today as coach of the Dallas Mavericks, the team said Thursday.
Kevin Sullivan, a Maverick spokesman, said: “Jim Cleamons will be named as head coach tomorrow at noon. That’s about all I can say at this point.”
Cleamons--who will replace Dick Motta, who was fired last month--declined to confirm the speculation, saying, “I have no comment.”
Former Boston coach Chris Ford and former Phoenix coach Paul Westphal had been considered the leading candidates for the coaching job until Cleamons entered the picture.
Meanwhile, Dallas was meeting with Laker General Manager Mitch Kupchak on Thursday and today about the same job with the Mavericks. Kupchak is the second candidate for former GM Norm Sonju’s job, following former Washington Bullet John Nash.
“That process is continuing,” Sullivan said.
