A 20-year-old police volunteer died of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound Tuesday morning in a parking lot trailer of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Hollenbeck Division in Boyle Heights.
Lisa Maria Hernandez, a Police Explorer, was found about 9:15 a.m. in the department’s auxiliary trailer, located about 100 feet from the police station’s main building. Hollenbeck Capt. Bruce Hagerty said she obtained a weapon from a secured area.
Hagerty went to the nearby home of Hernandez’s parents to break the news of the death of their only daughter.
“This was the hardest notification I have ever made,” said Hagerty, a 25-year veteran.
Hernandez, a graduate of Roosevelt High School, had been a Police Explorer for three years and had planned to become a police officer.
