CSUN Lands Tight End Villagran

Aaron Villagran, a tight end from Pasadena City College, has committed to play football for Cal State Northridge.

Villagran, 6 feet 3, 225 pounds, also played at Mt. San Antonio College and Bishop Amat High.

Baseball

Dan Cowgill, who helped lead Cal State Northridge to the NCAA tournament last season, said he will not return as pitching coach because of a misunderstanding over whether he would be paid.

Cowgill, 42, a volunteer assistant last season, said he was promised on several occasions that he would eventually be paid.

Athletic Director Paul Bubb said he never told Cowgill he would be paid out of the athletic department budget. Cowgill could be paid from money raised by the baseball program, but that would be Coach Mike Batesole’s decision, Bubb said.

Batesole is on vacation and could not be reached for comment.

Right-handed pitcher Britt Cornwell has signed a letter of intent with Northridge. Cornwell, who played for The Master’s College last season, has three years of eligibility.

Track and Field

Renna Sihota, eighth in the girls’ triple jump for Selma High in the State championships last month, has signed a letter of intent with Cal State Northridge.

Steve Moss of Sherman Oaks won the midget boys’ division pentathlon at the USA Track & Field national youth championships last week in Salt Lake City.

Golf

Caryn Wilson of Mission Hills is tied for second place, four strokes off the lead, after two rounds of the California Women’s Championship at Torrey Pines.

Russell Surber of Flintridge Prep shot a 71 and is four strokes behind after one round of the American Golf Assn. tournament of champions in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Softball

The 18-and-under Southern California Stealth of Woodland Hills went undefeated in a qualifying tournament in Fremont, advancing to the national tournament in Minneapolis.

The Stealth’s 14-and-under team won a tournament in Sacramento and qualified for the national tournament in Texas.

Volleyball

Joe Olsen of Royal High, Jason Lee of Westlake and Ryan Hill of Crespi helped the L.A. Athletic Club win the age-18 division of the USA Junior Olympics in San Jose.
