Evelyn Danzig Levine; Wrote Tune for ‘Scarlet Ribbons’

Evelyn Danzig Levine, 94, concert pianist and songwriter who wrote the music for the song “Scarlet Ribbons.” The song was written in 1949, became a hit when Harry Belafonte recorded it five years later, and still is considered a classic American tune. Lyricist Jack Segal said he and Levine wrote the song in about 15 minutes at her home on New York’s Long Island. It has been recorded by more than 30 artists, including Perry Como, Dinah Shore, the Lennon Sisters, the Kingston Trio, Joan Baez and Sinead O’Connor. Levine and Segal collaborated on several other songs, including “Midnight in Manhattan” and “The Wonder of Wonderful You.” Born in Texas, Levine lived most of her life on Long Island. She moved to Los Angeles three years ago. On Friday in Los Angeles.
