School Wins Right to Bar Blind Woman

The Ohio Supreme Court ruled that Case Western Reserve University was within its rights when it denied a blind woman admission to its medical school because academic courses could not accommodate her. The court said that in addition to fundamentally altering academic courses to accommodate Cheryl Fischer, Case would have had to provide special help, which would place an undue burden on the school. The Cleveland school contended that a blind person would be unable to read X-rays or perform other fundamental procedures required of a physician.
