Donnell Bennett and Greg Hill each scored on short runs and the Kansas City defense made it eight consecutive exhibition quarters without yielding a touchdown as the Chiefs downed the penalty-plagued New Orleans Saints, 42-6, at Kansas City, Mo. Steve Bono, who threw three interceptions in a playoff loss to Indianapolis his last appearance in Arrowhead Stadium, completed three consecutive passes in a 69-yard touchdown drive the first time the Chiefs got the ball. . . . Third-stringer Jeff Brohm, a former Charger, threw for a tying touchdown on the last play of regulation and Jeff Wilkins, who missed three field goals and botched the extra point after Brohm’s touchdown pass, converted a 43-yard field goal with no time left in overtime as the San Francisco 49ers beat the San Diego Chargers, 16-13, at San Francisco.
Aaron Craver ran for two touchdowns and Jason Elam was successful on all four field-goal attempts of at least 40 yards, and the Denver Broncos beat the Carolina Panthers, 40-28, at Denver. . . . Michael Jackson caught a go-ahead touchdown from Vinny Testaverde 12 seconds before halftime and the Baltimore Ravens had 427 yards in offense in defeating the New York Giants, 37-27, at East Rutherford, N.J. . . . Offensive tackle Willie Anderson, Cincinnati’s first-round draft pick, injured his right knee in the third quarter of the Bengals’ 13-10 exhibition loss to the Arizona Cardinals at Tempe, Ariz. Kevin Jordan caught a 19-yard touchdown pass for the Cardinals to tie the score, 10-10, with 9:47 to play and Greg Davis kicked a 31-yard field goal with one second left.
