Junior Lifeguards to Graduate Tonight

Nearly 900 youngsters ages 9 to 15 will graduate tonight from the Fire and Marine Department’s Junior Lifeguard Program.

The ceremonies, which begin at 6 p.m. on the Balboa Pier, will honor participants in the seven-week “ocean proofing” program.

Though junior lifeguards are not employed as lifeguards by the city, “they are knowledgeable of many lifesaving techniques,” Fire and Marine Lt. John Blauer said.
