Law Firm Interns Finish Their Work

An award-winning program that places Santa Ana high school students in local law firms and other businesses for paid summer internships wrapped up its 1996 session Wednesday with closing ceremonies for the participants.

Project SELF, which stands for Summer Employment in Law Firms, is sponsored by the Orange County Bar Foundation. This year, the program placed 43 students in eight-week internships that paid $6.43 an hour for filing, answering telephones and other office duties.

Program coordinators say that Project SELF is more than just a summer job program because it focuses on students from low-income families who would not otherwise have a crack at office jobs.

“A lot of kids probably would not have this opportunity,” said Linda Johanson, director of educational programs for the foundation, “so we’re providing them with the opportunity.”

In addition to job placement, Project SELF provides students with work clothes and conducts seminars on how to manage their money.

The Orange County Bar Assn. founded Project SELF in 1995 but passed on the administrative duties to the foundation, which specializes in youth programs.
