San Diego State Trio Ineligible for Opener

Rushing leader George Jones and two other standout players were declared ineligible for San Diego State’s season opener for violating NCAA rules related to extra benefits, the school said.
Jones, who last season ranked second nationally in scoring (11.5 points a game) and third in rushing (153.5 yards), will miss the Sept. 7 game against Idaho, as will wide receiver Will Blackwell and cornerback Ricky Parker.
Rick Bay, San Diego State’s athletic director, said the players used rental cars provided by a children’s foundation while performing community service work this summer in San Diego.
