Greg Vaughn hit his fifth National League home run and 36th overall and Bob Tewksbury gave up three hits in 7 2/3 shutout innings for his first victory in a month as the Padres defeated the Montreal Expos, 3-0, Tuesday night at San Diego.
Vaughn, who had two hits, broke up a pitchers’ duel between Tewksbury and Rheal Cormier when he drove a 3-0 pitch over the left-field fence with one out in the sixth. Five of Vaughn’s nine hits with the NL West-leading Padres are homers.
Tony Gwynn doubled against Omar Daal in the eighth to score Rickey Henderson, who drew a leadoff walk. Gwynn stole third and scored on John Flaherty’s single against Mel Rojas.
Tewksbury (10-8), who had lost his last three decisions, won for the first time since July 21. Trevor Hoffman pitched the ninth for his 30th save.
Cormier (7-9) gave up one run and six hits in seven innings, with six strikeouts and one walk.
Atlanta 4, Cincinnati 1--Terry Pendleton hit his first home run since returning to the Braves, and Chipper Jones and Ryan Klesko also hit third-inning homers at Atlanta.
Tom Glavine (13-7) gave up five hits in eight innings as the Braves won their fifth in a row and eighth in nine games. Mark Wohlers pitched a perfect ninth for his 31st save, a team record.
Colorado 5, St. Louis 4--Dante Bichette hit his second homer of the game in the 13th inning to give the Rockies the victory at Denver.
Andres Galarraga singled against B.J. Mathews (2-5) and Bichette hit the next pitch for his 25th homer. It was his 11th multihomer game, his second this season.
Chicago 8, Florida 1--Marlin pitcher Mark Hutton (1-1) walked four of the first five hitters he faced and hit the fifth, helping the Cubs to an eight-run first inning at Chicago.
Pitcher Kevin Foster (4-2) and Ryne Sandberg each drove in two runs in the inning as Hutton threw only seven strikes in 25 pitches in his five-batter stint.
New York 7, San Francisco 3--Bobby Jones (11-7) struck out a career-high 10 and a rare infielder’s interference call led to four unearned runs for the Mets in the seventh inning at San Francisco.
With the score, 3-3, Osvaldo Fernandez (5-13) walked Alex Ochoa starting the eighth. Edgardo Alfonzo sacrificed and reliever Doug Creek intentionally walked Chris Jones.
Carl Everett grounded a single to left and Ochoa apparently was thrown out at the plate by Barry Bonds. But third-base umpire Gary Darling ruled third baseman Bill Mueller interfered with Ochoa as he rounded third.
Houston 9, Pittsburgh 4--John Cangelosi had four hits in his first game since a four-game suspension and Donne Wall (7-4) stopped his four-game losing streak in the Astros victory at Houston.
