Manuals on CDs

Even though Toshiba’s Electronic Imaging Division makes copiers, the Irvine-based company knows that paper isn’t always the best medium.
Toshiba said that, for the first time, it is putting service manuals for its copiers on compact discs, or CD-ROMs, in addition to paper. Ray Mentch, director of field service for Toshiba’s Electronic Imaging Division, said the move is designed to make life easier for repair technicians.
“Today’s technician typically services 10 to 20 different models,” Mentch said. “So the hard-copy manuals become a bulky thing for them to carry around.”
In contrast, a few CDs can easily fit into a small case. By inserting the disc into a laptop computer, a technician can search for key words and phrases, zoom in on helpful pictures and even bookmark frequently used pages.
