Police Seek Mother of Abandoned Child

Oxnard police are still attempting to positively identify a woman suspected of abandoning her 1-year-old daughter outside a Ventura Boulevard department store Sunday after security guards confronted her on suspicion of shoplifting.
A witness who was to attempt to identify Regina Quinonez, 24, from a photo lineup Tuesday night did not show up, police said. Detectives will attempt to contact the witness today.
“It’s inconceivable that someone could do this,” Officer Tom Chronister said of the alleged abandonment. “If we don’t get a positive identification on who actually did this, we don’t have a case.”
The woman, who is not yet in custody, is suspected of leaving her daughter behind when she allegedly left the Marshall’s department store at 1835 E. Ventura Blvd. without paying for some merchandise, and security guards tried to apprehend her.
Police are also seeking Martha Magana, 23, who is suspected of shoplifting along with Quinonez.
The child remains in protective custody, Chronister said.
