Teenager Enters Plea in Shooting at Mall

An Oxnard youth pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges that he shot and killed another 16-year-old at the Centerpoint Mall in January.
James Moreno, 16, denied the murder allegation during an arraignment in Ventura County Municipal Court.
Moreno, who is being tried as an adult, was one of three young men arrested in the Jan. 25 shooting of Felipe Hernandez in front of shoppers at the Centerpoint Mall in Oxnard.
Another 16-year-old, who was not identified, and 22-year-old Victor Raul Aguilar were arrested, but have not been charged.
Hernandez was shot once in the upper chest in what police described as a gang-related killing outside the mall. Hernandez, who police say was not a gang member, was pulled into the mall by his friends after the shooting and died shortly thereafter.
Moreno’s trial has been set for Oct. 22. He is being held in Juvenile Hall in lieu of $250,000 bail.
