Serbs Raze Houses on U.N. List, Envoy Says

The U.N. refugee agency accused Bosnian Serb authorities of using a U.N. aid agency list to pick out Muslim- and Croat-owned houses for destruction. Two weeks ago, 96 houses in hamlets throughout Serb-controlled northwestern Bosnia-Herzegovina were blown up in the space of a few hours. The perpetrators were never identified, but international officials said the destruction was obviously well-organized. Kris Janowski, spokesman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, said the U.N. agency had submitted the list to the Bosnian Serb mayor of Prijedor to ease visits by the refugees, who were forcefully evicted during the war. “This list was then apparently used . . . as a demolition list rather than a visit list,” Janowski said.
