Lloyd A. Free; Pioneer in International Opinion Research

Lloyd A. Free, 88, a pioneer in international public opinion research. A native of San Jose, which his father represented in Congress, Free earned an undergraduate degree at Princeton and a law degree from Stanford. He helped track Nazi propaganda on the airwaves during World War II, and later headed the worldwide information program in the State Department that developed into the U.S. Information Agency. After several years of researching opinion in the U.S. and abroad, Free co-founded the Institute for International Social Research in Princeton, N.J., and served as its president. Free wrote or co-authored several books. including “Six Allies and a Neutral,” “The Political Beliefs of Americans, “How Others See Us” and “State of the Nation” with two sequels. On Monday in Washington.
