A former left-wing mayor of a town in the troubled southern state of Guerrero and his wife were slain by a group of gunmen, police and family sources said. Guadalupe Valentino Lopez Carrasco, 50, of the left-wing Democratic Revolutionary Party, and his wife, Nicasia Hernandez Petatan, 52, were shot in the head Saturday. Armed men stopped the two near the village of Xalpatlahuac, about 140 miles south of Mexico City, Lopez Carrasco’s nephew Elvin Naves Flores said. He said his uncle and aunt were traveling with their grandchildren, who were not harmed, and that there were no signs of robbery. Police said they had not found a motive for the killing of the couple, who had been working as teachers in the region. Guerrero is a state often convulsed by intraparty violence.
