Caminiti Put on Disabled List

Ken Caminiti was put on the 15-day disabled list by the San Diego Padres because of a strained right hamstring.

The third baseman injured the hamstring April 20 running out an RBI double against St. Louis and sat out two games. He aggravated the injury running out a ground ball May 11 against Cincinnati.

“We don’t want to keep rushing him,” Padre Manager Bruce Bochy said. “We want to give him some time to heal up.

“We could press it, get him out there, but we’d be asking for trouble. He’s got a lot of years left. That’s what we’re thinking about.”

Caminiti is hitting .241 with four homers and 18 RBIs in 32 games.

Bochy said that Archi Cianfrocco, Craig Shipley and Scott Livingstone would see action at third in place of Caminiti.

Also on Tuesday, the Padres activated Shipley and first baseman Wally Joyner from the disabled list and optioned first baseman Derrek Lee to triple-A Las Vegas. Livingstone is expected to come off the disabled list today.

“We’re getting some health,” Bochy said, “but any time you lose core players it’s a little tougher.”
