To call attention to the need to protect one of the Earth’s natural resources, the Westlake Yacht Club and the Westlake Women’s Club will hold the 4th annual Ecology Festival and Regatta for Water Awareness on Sunday at Westlake Lake.
The festival of races, information booths and games will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Landing, 32139 Lindero Canyon Road, in Westlake Village.
All the boats competing in the regatta will be nonpolluting, electric-powered vessels that use rechargeable batteries, and sailboats powered by wind.
Members of the Lake Balboa Model Sailboat Club will race their battery-powered sailboats competitively and have them on display throughout the day.
A trophy will be awarded to the skipper who completes the Predicted Log Race, in which the participant navigates a race course after predicting how much time it will take.
No clocks are allowed on board, and the skipper who comes closest to his predicted time is declared the winner.
The festival will also feature environmental projects by local students, an art show and water sport exhibitions.
The event is designed to encourage people to recycle and to call attention to the dangers of polluting water as it flows from the Sierra to the ocean.
The event is free to the public.
