Galarraga, Walker Lead Rockies, 9-4

From Associated Press

Andres Galarraga had four hits, including a two-run homer, and Larry Walker also homered as the Colorado Rockies defeated the San Diego Padres, 9-4, Saturday night.

Galarraga leads the majors with 80 runs batted in. He and Walker are tied with Houston’s Jeff Bagwell for the National League lead with 21 home runs.

Galarraga’s homer off Sean Bergman (1-2) put the Rockies ahead, 5-3, in the fifth inning. Galarraga is 12 for 22 (.545) with two homers and seven RBIs this season against San Diego.

Eric Young tripled and hit a two-run homer

With two hits in five at-bats, Walker’s batting average fell to .415.

Tony Gwynn, out two games because of an inflamed right Achilles’ tendon, made a surprise start and went one for four with a walk for San Diego. He is batting .391, second to Walker.

With the Rockies ahead, 7-4, in the eighth, Gwynn grounded into an inning-ending double play against reliever Mike Munoz.

Gwynn, who left Wednesday’s game against Oakland, was expected to sit out the entire four-game series against the Rockies. Gwynn spent the previous two days with a soft cast on his foot.

Bryan Rekar (1-0), recalled from the minors Wednesday, won his first game in the majors since June 13, 1996. He pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up Archi Cianfrocco’s three-run homer in the second.

Colorado outfielder Ellis Burks, who aggravated a groin strain Thursday against the Padres and sat out Friday’s game, originally was penciled into the starting lineup. Burks, however, was scratched 30 minutes before the game.

San Diego third baseman Ken Caminiti, who sat out two games because of a left hamstring strain, did not start against Colorado on Saturday but did pinch-hit.

Caminiti was on the 15-day disabled list earlier this season (May 12-26) because of a strained right hamstring.
