Heavy Rains Kill 37; Rivers Are Swollen

Two days of heavy rains killed at least 37 people and flooded rivers in the northeastern province of Punjab, government officials said. The deaths occurred in the provincial capital, Lahore, and elsewhere in the province, where nearly 400 villages were hit by the belated monsoon rains. Most of the dead were crushed when houses collapsed, the officials said. In India, the monsoon rains have killed at least 945 people since June and damaged crops covering an area of 3.8 million acres, the government reported.
