Stanford Wins Title in Hawaii

Mike Montgomery says his Stanford team got more than a trophy from its trip to Hawaii.

“Everyone learned a lot while we were here,” Montgomery said. “Hopefully, it will make us better, and hopefully, we can come back again sometime.”

No. 15 Stanford scored 19 of its last 21 points on free throws Sunday as the Cardinal held off Butler for a 99-86 victory in the championship game of the Big Island Invitational Tournament at Hilo.

Kris Weems scored 29 points to lead Stanford (4-0). Matthew Graves scored 27 points for the Bulldogs (4-2).

To reach the final, Stanford held off a Valparaiso comeback by prevailing, 70-65, late Saturday.

No. 18 Oklahoma 86, Hawaii Hilo 70--Reserve Evan Wiley scored 29 points, leading the Sooners to seventh place at the Big Island Invitational at Hilo.

Wiley was on the bench for most of the first half but scored 21 after the break for the Sooners (4-2).

Merriel Jenkins led the Vulcans (0-3) with 26 points and 11 rebounds.

No. 21 Indiana 103, Northeast Louisiana 69--Jason Collier scored 23 points and Luke Recker had 22 at Honolulu as the Hoosiers (2-2) routed the Indians (1-6) in the consolation game of the Tipoff Tournament.

Recker scored six consecutive points in a 14-2 spurt that enabled the Hoosiers to turn a five-point deficit into a 47-40 halftime lead.

Indiana, upset by Hawaii in the opening round, went on a 16-0 run to start the second half and blew the game open.

Indiana Coach Bobby Knight didn’t start regulars A.J. Guyton or Andrae Patterson. Guyton entered the game with 2:23 left in the first half and Patterson came in to start the second half. No reason was given for their not being in the starting lineup.

No. 23 Rhode Island 86, Boston University 63--Tyson Wheeler scored 23 points as Rhode Island won at Boston, ending the Terriers’ 15-game home winning streak.

Leading by 17 points at halftime, the Rams (2-1) opened the second half with a 7-3 run to blow the game open.

OTHER GAMES

D’Juan Baker scored a career-high 33 points to lead Cincinnati to an 87-57 home victory over Morehead State. Bobby Brannen had 14 points for Cincinnati (2-1). Aaron Knight led Morehead State (0-4) with 13 points. . . . Ryan Blackwell and Marius Janulis each scored six points to key a 16-point second-half run that erased a double-digit deficit and lifted Syracuse past Colgate, 78-74, at Syracuse. It was the 30th victory in a row for Syracuse (3-0) over Colgate (2-1) in the series, which began in the 1901-02 season.

Damian Owens scored a career-high 33 points to lead West Virginia (5-0) to a 96-74 rout of Dayton in the championship game of the San Juan Shootout at Caguas, Puerto Rico. Owens, who also had 11 rebounds, three assists and four steals, was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Coby Turner led Dayton (2-3) with a career-high 22 points. . . . In the fifth-place game, Marcus Wilson and Chris Hollender combined for 49 points to lead Evansville to a 90-66 victory over Pennsylvania. Wilson led all scorers with 25 points for the Aces (4-2). Penn fell to 2-2. . . . Rodrigo de la Fuente scored 17 points and had six steals, leading Washington State past Puerto Rico-Mayaguez, 85-51, for seventh place.

Jamie Sykes made a jumper at the buzzer to cap a 10-point Valparaiso comeback and give the Crusaders (2-3) a 75-73 victory over Pacific (4-3) and third place in the Big Island Invitational in Hilo. Hennssy Auriantal scored 19 points as Wisconsin (3-1) was a 78-61 winner over Montana (2-2) in the fifth-place game.

Dwayne Woodward scored 24 points to lead Boston College past Providence, 78-62, at Providence in both teams’ Big East opener. Antonio Granger scored 18 points and Mickey Curley had 16 for the Eagles (4-2). The Friars are 2-1.
