GOLDEN WEST LEAGUE

Ocean View: 25-5, 10-0 in 1996-97. Coach: Bill Seibert (second year, 25-5). Guard Jennifer Tuiolosega (20.2 points), county player of the year, is at San Diego and junior starters Tracy Lindquist (7.6 points, 4.2 assists) and Sharon Shelton (5-10) are concentrating on volleyball. The Seahawks, seeded second in Division II-A, lost in the quarterfinals. Senior center Anna Lembke (6-3, 15.8 points, 8.9 rebounds) shot a county-high 66.1% from the field, was a second-team all-county player and has signed with Pepperdine. Getting Lembke the ball falls largely on junior guard Kristin Mori (five points, three assists). Senior twins Rebecca and Vickie Beelner also must make strong contributions if Ocean View is to win its fourth consecutive Golden West title and fifth in a row overall dating to the Sunset League.

Rosary: 14-13, 7-3 in 1996-97. Coach: Rich Yoon (fourth year, 42-32). The three returning starters from last year’s Division III-A semifinalist are point guard Sarah Belavic (8.5 points, 6.9 assists), junior forward Romina Bollini (5-10, 9.1 points 7.6 rebounds) and sophomore guard Maggie Barnett (9.2 points). Bolstered by junior center Katrina Klein (6-1) from the JV and freshman forwards Ea Madrigal (5-10) and Haley Monroe (5-10), Rosary is taller and more athletic than usual, but depth and inexperience could be stumbling points.

Saddleback: 5-17, 2-8 in 1996-97. Coach: Adriel Esparza (second year, 5-17). Last season’s five victories were 2 1/2 times as many as the year before. Four starters return, including leading scorer Prabjot Kaur (5-5, 11.7 points), a junior point guard. Shooting guard Elisa Hernandez (5-4, 7.2 points), a junior, and two sophomores, forward Elidet Bravo (6.7 rebounds) and center Denise de la Rosa (6-1, 5.3 rebounds) also are back. Senior guard Deana Guzman averaged three steals a game, and Jannett Martinez, a junior guard, averaged 19.6 points on the junior varsity. Saddleback has won 12 games the last three years and could make a run at that total this season.

Santa Ana: 2-23, 0-10 in 1996-97. Coach: Roman Reyna (second year, 2-23). Two starters and seven players are back from last year. Seniors Nelly Abarca, a 5-7 guard, and Amelia Martinez, a 5-8 forward, return to the starting lineup. Guards Claudia Torres (5-2) and Patty Quiroz (5-6) should make a notable contribution. Two sophomore guards could also have an impact: Maribel Pineda provides defensive intensity and Patty Aguilar is an outside threat.

Tustin: 12-14, 4-6 in 1996-97. Coach: Steve Dunmeyer (second year, 12-14). The Tillers’ one returning starter, junior Brook Brown (6-0, eight points, 14.1 rebounds), led the county in rebounding. Two part-time starters, junior guard Terrial Cole and forward Jesse Cooper (6-2, four points), also return. There are only two seniors on the team. Freshman point guard Jackie Williams could be a factor, and exchange student Susana Jara from Ecuador will start at small forward or shooting guard. The Tillers are quick, but they need to learn to play together.

Westminster: 18-9, 7-3 in 1996-97. Coach: Dick Katz (14th year, 137-196). Westminster has eight players back, including three starters, as it tries to win a share of its second league title; it tied with Ocean View in 1995-96. Senior forward Janet Glasby (5-10, 14 points) leads the Lions. Junior guard Tara Moore (5-9, seven points, seven rebounds) tries to pick up where her graduated sister, Erin Moore (13.3 points), left off. Sophomore guard Holly Armstrong (5-5, 3.5 assists) also returns with high expectations. Height could be a problem, but the Lions should play good team defense and get fairly balanced scoring.
