Drain Cleaning Cuts Central Park Parking

A parking lot in eastern Central Park was closed for a month Monday to make way for dumpsters and equipment needed for a nearby storm drain pipe project.

The city plans to clean a 54-inch-diameter pipe that runs parallel to Gothard Street, between Warner and Slater avenues.

The parking lot, in the northeast corner of the park near Slater Avenue and Golden West Street, will be used to store six dumpsters and cleanup equipment that crews will use to clean the pipe.

Normally such a pipe is self-cleaning, but this one has taken in water runoff for the past 27 years and is filled with debris, soil and silt.

City officials said that Consolidated Waste Industries, Inc. will remove the debris. The line should be clean in about four weeks.
