Police Kill Robbery Suspect, Wound Second Man After Chase

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department on Monday was investigating a shooting involving a Manhattan Beach police officer that resulted in the death of one man and the wounding of another.

A man, whom police did not identify, was followed to his Manhattan Beach home on 14th Street on Saturday night by four men driving a Jeep Cherokee, Deputy Michael Irving said. The Manhattan Beach resident, who had parked his car in front of his house, was knocked to the ground, authorities said. When one of the men pulled out a gun, the resident screamed, alerting the victim’s wife, who was inside the house.

She came out and yelled, distracting the robbers and giving her husband time to run into the house, Irving said.

The couple called police, who began searching for the suspects. A short time later, about 11:40 p.m., police saw a Jeep Cherokee and pursued it until it crashed on Firmona Avenue in Lawndale near Jane Adams Park.

Police opened fire because they believed they were being fired upon, Irving said.

One man, identified as Furman Little, 27, of Los Angeles was struck several times in the chest and died later at a local hospital. A second man, Walter Woods, 26, of Ontario, was wounded and is listed in stable condition at County-USC Medical Center.

Two other men, Chapple Sims, 28, and Deon Arnold, 30, both of Los Angeles, were booked at the Manhattan Beach police station on charges of attempted robbery, authorities said.
