MEXICO CITY — The Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, lost its absolute majority in the lower house of Congress in midterm elections, official results showed Thursday.
The PRI, which has ruled Mexico since 1929, fell short of the minimum 167 of 300 directly elected seats in the 500-seat Chamber of Deputies needed to clinch a majority, the results showed.
With ballots for 294 of the seats counted, the PRI had won 159 seats against 69 for the Democratic Revolution Party and 65 for the National Action Party.
