Combining Air, Sea and Rail Travel

Travel by airplane, ship and train is combined in new Amtrak Cruise Rail packages, the result of a three-way partnership among Amtrak, Carnival Cruise Lines and United Airlines.

Vacationers can choose from 13 Carnival cruises lasting four to six days in Alaska, Mexico and the Caribbean, take the train to the port, and then fly back home after the cruise. Ports include Los Angeles, New Orleans, Miami, Tampa, Orlando and Vancouver, Canada. Prices vary. One package, for instance, includes round-trip rail or air-and-rail between New York City and Miami, a night’s lodging in Miami, transfer to the pier and a three-day cruise with a stop in Nassau, all priced from $705, double occupancy, including taxes. For reservations, see a travel agent or call (800) 321-8684.

In another new service, Amtrak and VIA Rail Canada next year plan to offer a 30-day North American Rail Pass--similar in concept to the Eurailpass in Europe--good for unlimited train travel within the period. Prices and other details are still being worked out.
