Withnail & I (Bravo Sunday at 7:05 p.m.and midnight) is the hilarious 1986 British comedy in which a pair of burned-out actors (Richard E. Grant, Paul McCann) retreat to the country place of McCann’s irrepressible gay uncle (portly Richard Griffiths).
Dark Eyes (TMC Friday at 5:25 p.m.), Nikita Mikhalkov’s superb 1987 adaptation of “The Lady With the Dog”--previously filmed by Josef Heifitz--is a Chekhov subject done in the style of Fellini. If it seems an odd mixture, it’s odder still that it works so well. Marcello Mastroianni, in a truly poignant performance, plays the wealthy wastrel in love with a pure woman; time and love pass him by.
