Council Loosens Garage Sale Rules

Residents can have more than one outdoor garage sale a year, the City Council recently decided, but they will still be required to pay a $10 fee.
The council voted to change the city’s municipal codes to allow as many as three outdoor garage sales a year. The former policy of one sale a year had been criticized by residents as too restrictive.
The council also decided to eliminate a proposed time restriction of 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. It opted to keep in place a $10 permit fee for each sale, despite a recommendation by the city’s Planning Commission to eliminate the charge.
Officials said the changes make Westminster’s codes more like those of surrounding cities, which generally allow two to four garage sales in a 12-month period.
