IRA Suspect Returns to Northern Ireland

BELFAST, Northern Ireland — A suspect in an IRA attack, whose extradition to Germany was halted by Britain’s government, has returned to Northern Ireland, her mother said Sunday.
Roisin McAliskey was arrested in November 1996 and held in London without charges while fighting extradition to Germany. Police there want to question her about a June 1996 mortar attack on a British army barracks in Osnabruck, Germany. Nobody was injured in the Irish Republican Army strike. She denied involvement.
McAliskey and her 10-month-old daughter have returned to her hometown of Coalisland, said her mother, Bernadette Devlin McAliskey, a prominent Roman Catholic activist.
Britain’s government decided a month ago that because of medical problems, it would be “unjust and oppressive” to send her to Germany.
