Organ Transplants

Re “Better Organ Transplant Policy,” editorial, April 8:
The main problem is the shortage of organs; everyone agrees that there would be sufficient organs if more people became potential donors. Our current system is a failed system.
The answer to this ongoing crisis is obvious--simply require that anyone receiving a transplant must have signed up previously as a donor. A system based upon old-fashioned self-interest would work: If people were told that they must sign up (for a certain period of time or by a certain age) and become a prospective donor to become eligible to receive a transplant in the future, there would be a stampede to sign up!
