Larger Classes Expected Next Year

An enrollment increase means larger classes next year, according to Santa Ana Unified School District officials.
Last year, district elementary schools reduced the number of students in first- and second-grade classes to 20. Seventeen schools created smaller classes in third grade or kindergarten.
District officials predict that only seven schools will be able to continue with just 20 students per class in three grades next year. All 32 will be able to keep smaller classes in the first and second grades.
In the 1998-99 school year, elementary schools expect an increase of 1,300 pupils. Because the schools already are beyond capacity, many will need more portable classrooms.
The district expects it will need 44 new portable classrooms next year, each capable of holding one class of 30 students.
