Panel Denies Appeal by Landfill Critics

Saying that no evidence of an active earthquake fault exists at the site, a state panel has denied a final appeal by opponents of Toland Road Landfill, who demanded the dump’s closure.
The State Water Resources Control Board issued its decision Thursday.
Officials with the Ventura Regional Sanitation District, which operates the dump that lies midway between Fillmore and Santa Paula, say they have spent more than $1 million on geologic tests at the site to assess a potential threat.
“At this point, further investigations are not justified and would constitute a waste of the public’s funds,” said Jon Sharkey, chairman of the district’s board.
The citizens group also recently asked the state to investigate the possibility that the dump was built upon a massive 5,000-year-old landslide that could damage or destroy the landfill.
