Pavel Bure scored his 50th goal of the season in a losing cause as Andrew Cassels scored twice to lead the Calgary Flames to a 4-2 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Friday night at Vancouver, British Columbia.
Marty McInnis put Calgary ahead for good, breaking a 1-1 tie with a short-handed goal with 1:38 left in the second period, as the Flames ended a six-game winless streak in a contest between two teams out of playoff contention.
Sent in alone by a Cory Stillman pass, McInnis cut to the net and tucked the puck through goalie Garth Snow’s legs.
Bure, who had 60-goal seasons in 1993 and ‘94, became the third player to reach the 50-goal plateau this year, doing it in his 81st game. Washington’s Peter Bondra has 49 goals with two games left.
The goal will earn Bure an automatic raise in the final year of his five-year contract as he will now receive the average pay of the top three forwards in the NHL next season.
