KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. — Astronauts aboard the space shuttle Columbia removed embryos from nine mice Sunday as they orbited Earth on a mission to probe the brain and nervous system.
Astronauts Dave Williams and Jay Buckey Jr., working with gloved hands inside a special box, anesthetized and dissected the mice.
Columbia’s seven astronauts, as well as 2,000 creatures, are serving as test subjects for a $99-million research program to study the effects of space travel.
