A 15-member engineering team from Cal State L.A. won first place Monday in the “Mini-Baja West” competition for its creation of an all-terrain vehicle.
It is the second time a Cal State L.A. team has won the event. This year’s top prize was presented for a four-wheel, single-seat, off-road recreational vehicle that the students designed, built, promoted and raced, college spokeswoman Margie Yu said.
The car had to negotiate rough terrain without damage and had to be safe, easily transported, easily maintained and fun to drive, Yu said.
The car also was recognized for its acceleration and hill climbing ability, she said.
The team traveled to El Paso to compete against more than 150 colleges and universities from the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico, Brazil and Mexico.
