On the Money Trail

Looking to score a little extra cash?
“One in four Americans is owed money from unclaimed assets by state and federal agencies,” says Mark Tofal, author of “Unclaimed Assets: Money the Government Owes You” (Nupa, 1998).
Unclaimed money comes in the form of uncashed checks; non-refunded deposits; forgotten bank accounts and safe deposit boxes; abandoned stocks and bonds; and more.
How do assets become lost?
“People move, or they lose track of money in times of catastrophe,” Tofal says.
The National Assn. of Unclaimed Property administrator’s Web site (https://www.unclaimed.org) lets you search many state databases simply by typing in your name.
