Zamiro Bennem
Men’s basketball
Bennem, a 6-foot-3 freshman guard, scored 26 points in two games last week.
He made five of nine shots, including three of six three-pointers, in a 71-57 loss to James Madison Sunday. He had a season-high 16 points in that game.
Bennem, a graduate of Magnolia High School, is averaging eight points and is shooting 43% on three-pointers this season. He has also been assigned the opponents’ top guard on defense.
THIS WEEK
Men’s basketball: The Anteaters’ leading rebounder Sunday was Jerry Green with seven. Not a bad total, but should the point guard be the high rebounder? “At this stage, I don’t care who gets them,” Coach Pat Douglass said. James Madison had a 52-27 edge in rebounding. Adam Stetson, who missed the first six games because of a torn tendon in his left foot, scored 10 points Sunday but left late in the game after re-injuring his foot. Irvine gets a break from Division I opponents when it hosts Division II Southern Oregon Monday in the Bren Center at 7:30 p.m.
Women’s basketball: Forward Char-Pei Chen, who had not played this season because of a back injury, played Sunday against Arkansas State. She scored only two points, but her return gives the Anteaters more options up front. UCI plays Duquesne at 5:30 p.m. Monday in the Bren Center.
