Following months of work, Mayor Shirley S. Dettloff announced this week the June opening of a plaza that the city hopes will attract thousands of tourists to the spruced-up beach area.
Dettloff said a weeklong celebration for Pier Plaza at Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway will begin June 5, when several bands, dance and youth groups mark the grand opening.
The $6.3-million reconstruction of the plaza has been underway for several months and is expected to be done by the end of May, said Rick Stadnick, a facility maintenance worker.
Planned as an entry to the Huntington Beach Pier and adjacent beach, the Pier Plaza will include a three-story garage and two restaurants.
